This is one of the corner stones of a great image. In photography we have three immutable laws that we must abide by to get a good exposure. How we weigh the trinity is a blend of artistic decision, what you’re photographing and environmental constraints. It’s a careful balancing act and negotiating with physics to get the best deal [More…]

I like to keep my numbering sequential for my RAW files for each camera. Since one camera is older than the other it makes for easy sorting of images, well until you put the wrong card into the camera! Restoring the numbering for the camera is easy; if sometimes time consuming as it doesn’t always [More…]

This is a quick post to let you know that the first of the retouching tutorials is due to go up shortly. I’ve done some portrait sessions recently specifically for Blueprint and I’m currently processing these images for release. Whilst I’ve not covered some of the more technical aspects of Photoshop this will be a good introduction [More…]

That should be the motto of every photographer. No matter how skilled, how aware or even how great you are at lighting there is always something you can learn especially when you make mistakes, and lets be honest if you’re not pushing your skills every time you do a session you’re not making mistakes. Mistakes are [More…]

Call it an epiphany of awareness (or, more likely, a side effect of insomnia) but I decided to go back to the early days of my photography. A time where all I had was a single lens for my new camera and learning how to ‘see’ a scene. My project is as simple as it’s complex. To view the world with [More…]

For the last 5 years or so I’ve been doing what’s now become commonly known as Strobism, a movement of people inspired by David Hobby. I know my gear like the back of my hand but after 5 years it’s limiting me what I can and can’t do for my style of work. It’s important for me to have gear [More…]

Welcome to Blueprint. A teaching resource for both photography and editing images. It aims to provide an insight to my workflow, techniques and methods. It will cover primarily Adobe Photoshop, Elinchrom studio lights and accessories, Canon e-TTL lighting and other similar topics. Additionally I may put up content regarding IT hardware pertaining to photography in the future.
